WE MAKE BRITAIN 'S BEST BEEF BURGER

Coates Butchers' beef burger best at National BBQ Championships Britain 's best beef burger comes from H Coates & Son Butchers. The business clinched the individual beef burger product title at the 2006 Guild of Q Butchers National Barbecue Championships and Product Evaluation in Chepstow, South Wales . The championship-winning product, also awarded gold at the contest, was Coates' Mexican Burger, made of prime mincemeat, red and green chillies, fresh onion and a touch of cumin. "It's a burger that bites back!" said delighted business owner Harry Coates, who was present to support his title-winning four-strong team, comprising butchers Ivan Lowther, John Green, Jason Kane and Brian Bonarius. H Coates & Son also landed a hat-trick of silver awards with its herb lamb sausage, pork rump with black pepper sauce, and Hawaian turkey kebab. All award-winning entries are on sale at the business's two shops as part of a comprehensive 2006 "Summer Eating" products portfolio. Thirteen teams of Q butchers from across the country competed in the championships, with products judged by a panel headed by award-winning chef and television food presenter Franco Taruschio. Harry reports that following the championship-winning success, there's been a beef burger boom at both shops. "We’ve been inundated by demand for the country’s best burger and expect sales to rise even further as the 2006 barbecue season gets into full swing,” he added

Awards windfall for Coates Butchers
H Coates & Son Butchers landed an eight-strong awards windfall - including four golds and an overall national championship success - in the annual Guild of Q Butchers "Smithfield Awards" product evaluation. Coates Butchers clinched gold for its traditional pork sausage, herbed lamb sausage, honey roast bacon loin, and family steak pie, silver for pork & black pudding sausage and minced beef & onion pie, plus bronze for chicken royale. The family steak pie, produced in the bakery at Coxhoe, then went on to scoop the English Beef and Lamb Executive's award for the best pies and bakery product . The Smithfield Awards are among the most prestigious in the meat industry, with products subjected to detailed assessment and sampling by a panel of independent judges. They were presented to owner Harry Coates and General manager Ivan Lowther at a ceremony in Butchers Hall, London , by celebrity chef Nick Nairn.

Harry Coates said: "As a member of the Guild of Q Butchers, we aspire to the highest standards in the trade and to win a Smithfield Award is a tremendous honour. We were thrilled to do so well in the 2005 product evaluation and our customers can look forward in 2006 to enjoying many of these award-winning products."
Over 300 entries from Q butchers all over Britain were judged for the Smithfield Awards, which were sponsored by EBLEX - the English Beef and Lamb Executive - and food chain suppliers Dalziel. The products were assessed at the Meat Technology Department at Thomas Danby College , Leeds .
H Coates & Son also scooped four gold medals and a brace of overall championship wins at a major product evaluation event in the north-east.
At the British Pig Executive (BPEX) regional roadshow for butchers, held in Stockton-on-Tees, Coates Butchers struck gold with two sausage entries, herbed lamb, and pork & black pudding, and two brand-new ready meals - lamb hotpot and beef cobbler.
In addition, the beef dish, a casserole topped with savoury cheese scones, was chosen as the overall champion ready meal, while the herbed lamb sausage was voted champion in the beef or lamb sausage category.

COATES TRIO REAP KEY CASH FOR CHARITY
Coates Butchers' Ivan Lowther, Michael Snowball and Norma Lowther have helped raise over £3,000 for charity.
All three have attended a "Key Employee Programme" run by Durham Business School , where teams were handed a tenner and tasked with using their initiative to raise as much cash as possible for a worthy cause.
Ivan's team put down a deposit on a luxury hamper, which went on to realise £800 for Children in Need.
Next up were Norma and Michael, whose team placed a deposit on a venue for a charity bash featuring live entertainment, which netted a few pence short of £2,265 for Macmillan Cancer Relief - a superb result.
All three said they had benefited significantly by going on the programme. "It gave us a good knowledge of how business works and how different people can work together, which is obviously important in a business like ours," they said.
Commenting on the achievement of both teams. Durham Business School 's Jeremy Wright said" It's dead good, isn't it!

Germany gets a true taste of Caotes' finest sizzlers!

Award-winning sausages from H Coates & Son have strengthened links with Frankfurter-loving Germans!
the region's educational and cultural links with Germany were fortified after the business's Coxhoe shop donated several of Coates' Great British banger ranges for a historic trip to Alpen. The sizzling sausages idea came about when a party of children and teachers from Trimdon St. William's RC School and Trimdon Junior School left Coxhoe for a cultural exchange visit funded by the British Council.
To pass on a true taste of the north-east, the party decided to take traditional regional fare - namely Coates Butchers' famous sausages - as a present to be handed over at a civic reception hosted by the Mayor of Alpen, Burgomeister Thomas Ahls.
A mixture of traditional pork, pork and black pudding, pork and Royal Venision, and Cumberland sausages were presented by St. William's headteacher Sheila Doherty, together with a copy of the latest edition of H Coates & Son's customer newsletter "Coates Clarion."
She commented afterwards: "Burgomeister Ahls was delighted with his gift and said he looked forward to sampling the English sausages. He also wished the delegates' visit well and said he looked forward to further developments in the cultural evolution of our various traditions." H Coates & Son also donated its equally renowned pies and sausage rolls to sustain the travellers on their journey. They were enjoyed by the party as they explored Delft and Gouda en route to Alpen. Mrs Doherty added: "We enjoy Coates' fare and are grateful to owner Harry Coates for his generous donation."
Harry Coates added: "We are great believers in promoting business-education partnerships at every opportunity and were more than happy to support this extremely worthwhile international cultural exchange initiative. If there's a next time, we'll make sure we send over some of our award-winning burgers for the Burgomeister!"

Coates butchers land awards coup
Two high-flyers Coates butchers have both gained one of the highest qualifications in the industry sector.
Ivan Lowther and Jason Kane have been awarded the prestigious Meat Training Council's Level 3 qualification in Supervisory Management.
Training was conducted in-house by Peter Burke, Butchery NVQ Assessor with Sunderland-based PSB Training, the only Meat Training Council-approved provider in the northern area. Support funding was provided by the North-East Food & Drink Network.
Peter said: "These qualifications are rarely awarded, so this really is something special. Harry Coates places a great deal of emphasis on training and upskilling all his staff in order to achieve continuous improvement of both the workforce and the business in general."
David Grailey, chief executive of the Meat Training Council, commented: "It is a major achievement and demonstrates a serious commitment to staff development on the part of Coates Butchers. This should be fully recognised because while many people have trained staff, Coates has obviously gone one step further and this in itself will do a great deal to enhance customer confidence in the business.
"For H Coates & Son to help its staff so much with their own personal development is highly commendable. There is a national skills shortage in the meat industry for good young butchers, yet it is an industry that does reward hard work and talent, as clearly demonstrated by Coates Butchers and its high achievers.
"It can be held up as a shining example of best practice to other butchers across the country as the industry attempts to plug the skills gap by going out into schools in a bid to attract keen young people and identify the potential butcher stars of the future."

SURVEY PROVOKES SUPERB RESPONSE

A Coates Butchers customer survey, newly introduced among people chosen at random from the business's mailing lists, has produced an overwhelming 70% response rate.
The excellent feedback has been carefully analysed by Coates' PR company Moule Media and forwarded to Harry Coates and his management team, who will then sit down and examine the responses in detail, with a view to acting on any feasible suggestions.
"With the help of our customers we can only continue to improve. We warmly thank all who responded to the survey in such magnificent numbers - and more than welcome further feedback from our valued customers," comments Harry Coates.
The initiative also involved a free draw for a £50 Coates Meat Voucher. The winner will be informed direct.
